Tsismis: Latest gossip from the Pinoy world

Vincent Anthony Garcia brings you the latest gossip from the Pinoy world

Clockwise from top-right: Riza Santos, Sarah Geronimo and Jackie Rice.
Her rise to stardom was supposed to have been meteoric, after winning GMA 7's reality celebrity search Starstruck in 2005. But Jackie Rice, born to an American father and a Filipina mother, had other plans.

"I was a teenage girl, so I wanted to live life like one. Party, relationships, fun — it was all I had in mind," confessed the celebrity back then dubbed "little miss trouble" by the press for missing shoots and fighting publicly with her mother, among other delinquencies.

Rice admitted she wanted to be a celebrity, but winning Starstruck felt like a big responsibility. "I wasn't ready. And it's not like you get to enjoy the perks right away. I thought it would be easy," she said.

Since winning the coveted celebrity search competition, Rice has appeared only in support roles in several TV and film assignments, though some of these had some huge budgets and big stars. She was, after all, being groomed to be the next important star in Philippine showbusiness.

Still, the TV network that discovered her had faith in her. This year, Rice received her biggest break when she was cast as the lead star of a new TV series, Sisid (Dive). She had to learn how to swim for her latest project, and she had an ultimatum. "‘Learn quickly or lose the title role,' was the directive from the management," she recalled.

"I had to make a decision to really give this 100 per cent. It wasn't just the role I was going to lose — I felt my career was going to go bust if I passed up on this one."

So swim she did, and like a cleansing regimen, the training seemed to have given the troubled star a new perspective in life. "The discipline, the hard work, the water — everything just seemed to have a positive effect on me," said Rice, who at the start of production had a minor injury after she hit her foot during an intense dramatic scene.

She was advised by her doctor to rest, and her producers gave her time to heal. "But I offered to come back immediately," she said, admitting she didn't want to be the cause of delay of another project.

"I wanted to show them that I'm really committed this time, and that I am little Miss Trouble no more."

Sam's Elated

Sam Milby didn't win the Best Actor award at the recently concluded Urian Awards, but the Filipino-American actor is still happy he was at least nominated by one of the most credible award-giving bodies in the industry, composed as it is of highly respected film critics.

Milby's performance in the indie film Third World Happy by first-time director EJ Salcedo earned for him his first acting nomination. At a press conference for his new movie, still in production with teen star K.C. Concepcion, Milby said he is all the more motivated to get better at his craft, including polishing his Tagalog.

Canada's Bet

A former housemate of ABS CBN's Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition 2 was crowned Miss World Canada 2011 in a pageant held in Richmond, British Columbia on May 19.

Riza Santos, a Filipino-Canadian, will represent Canada in the Miss World pageant in London in November. Santos left the Philippines in 2008 after a brief stint amidst allegations by her co-stars that she had become a prima donna. She appeared in two forgettable films — When Love Begins and Dobol Trobol, and was also part of the cast of the Philippine adaptation of the American series Betty La Fea.

No Rift

Sarah Geronimo was clueless when asked about a rumoured rift with the management of Star Cinema, the film arm of ABS CBN.

The pop star said she didn't know there was a rift and believed everything was well between her (and her handlers, Viva Artist Agency) and Star Cinema. In fact, she revealed plans are in the works for a reunion movie with Gerald Anderson next year.

Big Screen Beckons

Dingdong Dantes is happy his latest TV project, I Heart You Pare, has finally come to an end, so he can concentrate on his movie career.

The actor is set to do two films this year, one a horror movie with noted director Erik Matti, and the other a scary flick which will pair him for the first time with Kris Aquino. The latter is a co-production between him and his co-star, and is being eyed for the Metro Manila Film Festival in December.

Dantes has long dreamed of producing a movie and his venture with Aquino is his first foray in this field. He also plans to direct a movie at some point.
