BMW pays homage to the legendary 328

German luxury car maker celebrates the 328’s 75th birthday with a brilliant concept

In a fitting tribute to its legendary Thirties sportscar — the 328 — BMW has unveiled an absolute stunner of a concept called the 328 Hommage. Celebrating the original’s 75th anniversary, the 328 Hommage revives the elegant, narrow kidney grilles and the round headlights of past Bimmers.

The boffins have managed to keep the Hommage lightweight with the extensive use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic construction, like the 780kg aluminium and magnesium original. On the Hommage, the composite material is left naked both for technical and visual purposes.

There are other bits that reflect the original’s character such as matte and high-gloss black polished aluminium bits and the absence of doors. Underneath the sprawling bonnet with its stylish leather straps lives BMW’s familiar 3.0-litre mill, possibly the turbocharged unit from the 1 Series M.

The concept has an asymmetrical windscreen and inside it’s got aluminium seat belt buckles, four-point harnesses, a twin composite cockpit design, and some cool rally stage timers.

A highly successful sportscar, the 328 formed the basis of all sporty BMWs that followed; naturally aspirated inline engines, and rear-wheel drive as well as starting BMW’s naming system that’s still being used.
The original roadster’s Mille Miglia record of the highest average speed is still unbeaten.
