Philippine police arrest man over Dubai jobs scam: paper

DUBAI - Philippine police have arrested an Emirati man over a recruitment scam in which Filipinos were tricked into paying large fees for non-existent jobs in Dubai, according to UAE daily The National.

The suspect, identified only as A.K., was detained in a sting operation in Cebu City, the country’s second largest city, following complaints from five people, the newspaper reported citing police.

A further 14 people have come forward to lodge complaints since his arrest, including doctors, massage therapists and taxi drivers, The National said.

The victims were asked to pay up to 75,000 pesos ($1,700) each to cover visa and recruitment costs, according to the newspaper.

A.K., 47, was charged with illegal recruitment and estafa - large-scale fraud - at inquest proceedings on Tuesday, The National reported, adding that the suspect denied the charges.

A.K. was denied bail and given until Jan. 19 to file a counter-affidavit, the newspaper said.
